Undergraduate institutions should play larger research role

(American Institute of Biological Sciences) Biology educators at primarily undergraduate colleges and universities argue for coordinating networks to expand and improve ecological teaching and research at such institutions.

Though typically conducted on a low budget, research at undergraduate institutions could make larger contributions than hitherto if collaboration were increased, and undergraduates would benefit from the larger-scale research experience.

Since 1972, AIBS has presented the Distinguished Scientist Award annually to individuals who have made significant scientific contributions to the biological sciences, particularly in the fields of integrative and organismal biology.

The award is presented at the AIBS Annual Meeting. The 2009 Annual Meeting was recently held in Arlington, Va.
