(Arizona State University) Arizona State University geographer Paul Torrens is among the newest recipients of the competitive Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers.

Torrens, an associate professor in the School of Geographical Sciences was recognized Dec. 19 in a White House ceremony for his innovative, immersive 3-D computational modeling, which is designed to help predict social behavior in crowds: riot situations, pedestrian behavior, behavior of shoppers and along retail streets.

Experts detail the 3 rules for technological fixes

(Arizona State University) Technology can do great things, but it also can be over sold as panacea for a host of social ills.

A better use of technology can be gained if those who guide technology policy are clear about how to apply it and know what to expect.

This is the conclusion of an opinion piece in this week's Nature magazine written by Daniel Sarewitz of Arizona State University and Richard Nelson of Columbia University.

(National Science Foundation) Two new National Science Foundation-sponsored research studies say public acceptance of the relatively new, nature-altering science of nanotechnology isn't a foregone conclusion.

Instead, the studies indicate continued concern.Researchers at Yale University say that when people learn about this novel technology they become sharply divided along cultural lines, while a separate study led by researchers at the University of Wisconsin-Madison and Arizona State University says nanotechnology seems to be failing the moral litmus test of religion.

Fountain of Youth to be found in the anthill?

(Arizona State University) Aging -- we are all doing it. It is relentless and terminal. We stand in modern times with a span of a century to our name, at most.

Technological wizardry abounds, so why do the factors that determine life span still elude us? If you ask Arizona State University researcher Juergen Liebig, he would point to his favorite study animal, the ant, to provide answers.

Light-speed computer connection will slash genetic data transfer...

(The Translational Genomics Research Institute) In less time than the blink of an eye, the Translational Genomics Research Institute's new supercomputer at Arizona State University can do operations equal to every dollar in the recent Wall Street bailout.

That would be 700 billion computations in less than 1/60th of a second.

Ultrasound shown to exert remote control of brain circuits

(Arizona State University) In a twist on nontraditional uses of ultrasound, a group of neuroscientists at Arizona State University has developed pulsed ultrasound techniques that can remotely stimulate brain circuit activity.

Their findings, published in the Oct. 29 issue of the journal Public Library of Science One, provide insights into how low-power ultrasound can be harnessed for the noninvasive neurostimulation of brain circuits and offers the potential for new treatments of brain disorders and disease.
