College Degree

DaniWeb IT Discussion Community - IT Careers and Business  Sun, 01/29/2012 - 16:44

Hello All,

I'm a new member here at Daniweb and have been looking for an IT related forum to ask this question:

In your honest opinion, employee, employer, etc., do you think it matters what college one obtains a degree in Information Technology from when it comes to high amounts of competition?

One I'm sorry if this is the wrong place to ask this question.

If not could someone direct me to a forum that could assist me in this question.

Two if this is a good place for the question let me add a couple details about myself.

You may not be a big fan of Microsoft, but you wouldn't expect your computer to be held to ransom by the company would you?

Questions pertaining to importance of writing among IT professio...

DaniWeb IT Discussion Community - IT Careers and Business  Thu, 08/25/2011 - 10:42

hi all,

I guess my first thread here, and I am on with some questions too. Actually I am doing an article on importance of writing among IT professionals.

So what better place than Daniweb to ask it. In order to form such an article I will need your views. Answer the following questions in order.

And guide me if this isn't the best place to ask.

Q1. What is your name and job profile (like Database Administrator, Programmer etc.)?
Q2.

How often do you write each day a week?

Apple has released iOS 5, now here come the iPhone 5 specs

DaniWeb IT Discussion Community (Featured Entries)  Thu, 06/23/2011 - 03:01

With the release of iOS 5 to developers, Apple has signalled the arrival of the much awaited iPhone 5. But when can we expect to see it, and how will it be different to the iPhone?

As usual, the Apple rumor mill has been churning out specs for many months now but some seem much more likely than others so DaniWeb has attempted to separate the wheat from the chaff to bring you what we think is the most probable list of iPhone 5 specs.

DaniWeb has recovered from Google Panda ... Sorta

DaniWeb IT Discussion Community (Featured Entries)  Mon, 05/16/2011 - 13:52

As many of you are probably aware, DaniWeb was hit hard by Google's Panda algorithm update back in February.

A news story written by Davey entitled Google Farmer Update: what went wrong? explained that the February 24th Panda algorithm targeted at content farms literally cut DaniWeb's US traffic by half.

The global rollout that followed a month later did the same to all of our English-speaking traffic.

The TRUTH about the vBulletin forums MySQL security flaw

DaniWeb IT Discussion Community (Featured Entries)  Sun, 07/25/2010 - 04:39

Many of the biggest forum-based online communities, including DaniWeb, are powered by vBulletin software. So it came as something of a shock when the BBC reported that a vBulletin security flaw means that any hacker could "easily access the main administrator username and password for a site".

But is the security flaw really both that simple and that serious, and are DaniWeb users at risk?

DaniWeb as "Volunteer Work" on a Resume?

DaniWeb IT Discussion Community - IT Careers and Business  Tue, 07/13/2010 - 15:00

I'm just curious about the opinions of people in the programming industry as to what they would think of the following scenario:

  • User is an active contributor within DaniWeb (granted only recently joined)
  • User has supplied a large number of working solutions or at the very least processes by which solutions were derived for other members (for the time frame that they've been here)
  • User has shown knowledge and skill set within specific categories

Would it then be a case where that user could include their daily troubleshooting, debugging and code referenc

Danger: Windows XP SP2 End of Life incoming

DaniWeb IT Discussion Community (Featured Entries)  Thu, 06/03/2010 - 14:22

Microsoft will stop releasing security updates, hotfixes and other updates for Windwos XP SP2 on July 13th 2010.

No biggie, you might think, after all Windows XP SP3 was released way back in April 2008 and since then we've had both Vista (perhaps best forgotten) and the much more palatable Windows 7.

Yet despite the death of XP SP2 being absolutely no surprise to IT admins the world over, it would seem that a large number of machines within enterprise networks are still running that very version of the Windows OS.

News Story The iPad Is Cool But Can It Run Linux?

DaniWeb IT Discussion Community (Featured Entries)  Mon, 04/05/2010 - 15:45

Now there's a challenge for Apple hardware fans who don't necessarily love the "upgraded" iPhone OS: Install Linux on it.

It might be possible but the hard part is getting past the A4 processor. Is there a Linux kernel tweaked for it?

Why would you want to run Linux on an iPad? Wouldn't you lose much of the built-in functionality with such a move?

And, could you put the original OS back on it after potentially breaking it? $500 is pretty expensive for a paperweight.
