(Indiana University School of Medicine) As demand for electronic medical records and health information exchange grows, a universal method of identifying test results and other clinical measurement is essential.

The standardized medical terminology system called Logical Observation Identifiers Names and Codes, known as LOINC, with a 57,000 term code vocabulary, provides the lingua franca needed for the creation of an electronic medical record and for health information to be electronically exchanged.

The latest version of LOINC is being released on June 7.

(Physicians for a National Health Program) The increased computerization in US hospitals hasn't made them cheaper or more efficient, Harvard researchers say, although it may have modestly improved the quality of care for heart attacks.

The findings contradict claims by President Obama and many lawmakers that health information technology, including electronic medical records, will save billions and help make reform affordable.

The study uses data from the most extensive survey ever undertaken of hospital computerization.

Group Health awarded $1 million in stimulus funds

(Group Health Cooperative Center for Health Studies) The National Institute of Mental Health has awarded Group Health a $1 million stimulus grant to research more effective depression treatment.

The award is in federal stimulus funds from ARRA, the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009. Group Health psychiatrist Greg Simon, MD, MPH, leads the project.

It will use electronic medical records to track how individuals respond to different treatments. The goal: to match patients with the treatments that suit them best.
