The former Republican chair of the House Energy & Commerce Committee and the ranking member of the Telecommunications Subcommittee warned FCC chairman Kevin Martin that proposed new TV-programming-reporting guidelines meant to promote localism may instead promote shows that try to appeal to regulators.

The heads of the House Energy & Commerce Committee and its Telecommunications & Internet Subcommittee called on Federal FCC chairman Kevin Martin to put conditions on the merger of XM Satellite Radio and Sirius Satellite Radio if the commission votes to approve it, including allowing outside companies to make receivers that also receive competitive services like HD radio, the Internet and iPod-docking stations.

The chairman of the House Energy & Commerce Committee asked the FCC and the National Telecommunications and Information Administration for quarterly updates on whether there is enough money to subsidize digital-to-analog converter boxes for everyone who needs them.
