German legislators on Thursday overwhelmingly approved expanding the powers of the eurozone bailout fund, a major step toward tackling the sprawling debt crisis, in a vote that also helped strengthen Chancellor Angela Merkel's coalition government.


 

German government is advised to tune up the innovation engine

(Technische Universitaet Muenchen) Germany's legendary innovation engine is faltering, according to a report delivered to Chancellor Angela Merkel today, but could -- with a major tune-up -- help propel the economy from crisis to sustainable growth.

This package of sobering analysis and forceful advice came from the federally chartered Expert Commission on Research and Innovation, also known by the acronym EFI.

The German parliament is expected to discuss these issues in May and debate what actions to take.

Twitter has struck again according to reports. The German elections had their results leaked online, both on Twitter and over the open Internet.

In the same week that the UK heard that it was going to have insufficient broadband bandwidth to meet the needs of the Digital Britain initiative, critics in Germany are questioning whether going completely digital is such a good idea anyway, According to security expert Graham Cluley's blog, for example, Twitter is robbing the German Parliament of its dignity.
