Getty Images has made an interesting acquisition in buying the PicScout image recognition service a few weeks ago, and frankly, it's a smart move.

Getty Images, with millions of images, and a dwindling per image revenue stream, must find alternative revenue streams, and focusing on infringements is wise.


 

Demand Media Earnings Report – Revenue Up, Questions Remain

Demand Media just released its much-anticipated earnings report, which includes a revenue increase of 48%, year-over-year, but the thing investors are particularly interested in is the company’s performance post Panda-update.

The content and media revenue (ext-TAC) increased 77% year-over-year.

The Panda update, however, is only a few months old. Total revenue for the quarter for the content & media business was $79,523, well above estimates.

Also worth noting: a 32% increase in pageviews from the same period last year.

When Getty Images acquired iStockphoto, they said they did so to prevent iStockphoto from canibalizing their own business, at a time when the average price for a stock photograph was in the $900 range.

Here's a photo, on the iStockphoto website (here) of a nondescript fragrance bottle.

Price? About $10.

Yesterday, Getty Images CEO Jonathan Klein was interviewed for almost four minutes about the Getty deal with the Olympics on CNBC.

At about 2:28 into the interview, the issue of the Tiger Woods image made recently was raised (see link in 'Related' at end of article), and at approximately 2:47, Klein says "... we don't do paparazzi images..." and I about fell off my chair.

Dictionary.com defines market in several ways, the most applicable to this statement is "a body of existing or potential buyers for specific goods or services."
