Drug may reduce coronary artery plaque

(Cardiovascular Research Foundation) Research presented at the 20th annual Transcatheter Cardiovascular Therapeutics scientific symposium, sponsored by the Cardiovascular Research Foundation, suggests that olmesartan, a drug commonly used to treat high blood pressure, may play a role in reducing coronary plaque.

A new study published in PLoS Medicine has found that between 1983 and 1999, the death rate in women increased in a large number of the worst-off counties in the US, primarily because of chronic diseases related to smoking, high blood pressure, and obesity.

As a result of this stagnation or decline in the health of the worst-off segment of the population, inequality in life expectancy across different counties of the US worsened.


 

2-drug blood pressure therapy lowers cardiovascular risk

An international blood pressure study comparing two single-pill drug combinations has yielded results so significant that the study has been stopped early -- and the researchers say their findings might alter the way high blood pressure is treated worldwide.

The study revealed that the patients taking one of the combinations had 20 percent fewer heart-related events than the patients taking the other one.
