Microsoft Don’t Know Jack About UI Design

I laughed out loud when I saw this headline on the ars technica Web site: “Monkey see, monkey do: Microsoft launches mobile app site.” It’s so typical of Microsoft in recent years to desperately emulate companies it perceives as its competitors, even at the expense of its own embarrassment.

The move was in response, the article surmised, to Apple’s launch of App Store, a site for downloading iPhone apps through iTunes.

It’s beautiful, polished, intuitive and complete—classically Apple. Microsoft’s site, on the other hand, “brought Mr.

Flashy along for the ride, and left Mr....

RIMM Holding Off Apple - For Now

DaniWeb IT Discussion Community (Featured Entries)  Tue, 07/15/2008 - 10:30

Will the new iPhone chomp into Blackberry’s market share? Some thoughts on the subject are bubbling up on Wall Street, with the sentiment leaning toward Research in Motion, the company that manufacturers the Blackberry, being in good shape for the short term.

After all, the iPhone is great if you’re an Apple computer user, but not so much if you’re not. Most corporate users aren’t Apple users, and are reasonably happy with their Blackberry’s.

Not too many IT directors are going to take a sledgehammer to their telcom infrastructure to make way for a cell phone that isn’t as...

iPhone 3G: It Was All Yellow

DaniWeb IT Discussion Community (Featured Entries)  Tue, 07/15/2008 - 06:00

Here's an idea for an iPhone app project with a guaranteed user base: Build a tool for adjusting the display's color temperature.

It's not officially possible, according to Apple, but don't let that stop you-- there's evidence that it can in fact be done.

Because the day you purchased your new iPhone 3G, you were running an outdated version of the operating system.

And after updating (to v.5A347), you might notice that the screen color will be slightly less yellow, but still not as starkly white as the original iPhone.

iPhone isn't the whole story

My colleague Ron Miller makes some excellent points about the iPhone shortage in the US in his blog entry.

If this were any other company we would indeed be taking them to task. Hang on though, let's think a minute: everyone's talking about a hardware shortage, the iPhones aren't in stock yet so it's a bad thing, yes?

Well, yes, but that's only part of the story. A hardware shortage can be rectified over time. In the longer term a few people hanging around waiting for their phones a couple of days is an inconvenience, nothing more.

For me what was much more interesting was the MobileMe...

Consumers Should Be Mad as Hell Over iPhone Launch Debacle (But ...

DaniWeb IT Discussion Community (Featured Entries)  Mon, 07/14/2008 - 08:16

By all rights, iPhone consumers should be storming the gates of Apple headquarters this morning in true Bastille Day fashion after Friday's mishandling of the iPhone 3G launch, but as far as I know all remains calm in Cupertino, and consumers remain strangely silent over the whole affair.

In a post on Friday afternoon, my colleague Bill Andad (aka newsguy) rightly took Apple to task for failing to provide the necessary server capacity to ensure the iPhone 3G launch went smoothly.

He's right of course. It's unthinkable that a company with the resources of Apple failed to provide a seamless...

Even prayer cannot help Jesus Phone owners today

DaniWeb IT Discussion Community (Featured Entries)  Fri, 07/11/2008 - 15:30

It has not been a good day for Apple. Actually, let me rephrase that - it has not been a good day for Apple customers.

Here in the UK supplies of the Jesus Phone, the all new iPhone 3G, were scarce to say the least. Those people who did brave the early morning queues and get their hands on a handset were soon finding themselves coming down from the temporary high as they tried to activate the devices.

The same problem has apparently been hitting iPhone 3G users the world over.

iPhones across the pond

DaniWeb IT Discussion Community (Featured Entries)  Fri, 07/11/2008 - 10:54

I have an iPhone on my desk. Don't get excited, though - you'll have read a number of accounts of difficulties getting hold of them in the UK, and they're right.

I have one on my desk because mobile phone company 02's media relations department kindly sent it over so I could have a look at it before mine arrived as there seems to be some sort of delay.

They've taken the money from my bank account, I should add, which makes it just a little annoying that I don't have the phone itself as such.

They've then been asking new customers for extra ID over the phone. My wife, who shares my address...

Before You Get an iPhone, Be Sure You’ve Got the Touch

DaniWeb IT Discussion Community (Featured Entries)  Wed, 07/09/2008 - 09:40

The other day, my buddy got a shiny new 32GB iPod Touch. This morning he was kind enough to let me play with it and I’m glad he did because I learned that using that touch keyboard takes some practice.

The bad news: you can get frustrated in a hurry trying to type with your finger tip. The good news: after about 15 minutes of touch typing, I found I was getting pretty proficient and I’m sure my speed and accuracy will keep getting better with practice.

State of the Art: For iPhone, the ‘New’ Is Relative

Here comes the iPhone 3G, with a few new bells and whistles.
