The U.S. labor market got another jolt of good news Thursday when the government reported new claims for jobless benefits dropped to almost the lowest they have been in four years.

The jobless got a hand. Taxpayers got tax breaks. And a sinking economy stabilized.

Now comes the hard part for the auto industry — luring customers without big Cash for Clunkers discounts.
