Apple's unspecified fixes

DaniWeb IT Discussion Community (Featured Entries)  Tue, 08/19/2008 - 06:07

Here we go again with the iPhone, Apple says it's issuing a fix without - as is Apple's habit - telling us what it's fixing.

Even as a satisfied user I can think of plenty. Searchable e-mail. MobileMe that really works on my iPhone (it still does nothing outside theb e-mail).

A way of using the thing that doesn't demolish the battery before you've been out for a whole day. A do-list function for the phone that syncs with the do-list on iCal.

I suspect we're in for nothing as dramatic. Which is a shame.

Apple admits mistake

DaniWeb IT Discussion Community (Featured Entries)  Tue, 08/05/2008 - 11:37

I get the feeling a lot has been written on these blog pages about the iPhone 3G and MobileMe and a lot of people are probably not all that interested.

It's worth mentioning, though, that a leaked memo from Steve Jobs basically admits the MobileMe launch was premature.

I have to agree. It's still refusing to synch data with my iPhone, although the iMac is just fine. It's no trouble for me to synchronise with the Mac locally rather than online, but 'working' isn't the exact word you'd use to describe it.

Interesting. If Apple were to lose its reputation for releasing reliable products that...

More Dark Spots on Apple's MobileMe Migration

DaniWeb IT Discussion Community (Featured Entries)  Mon, 07/21/2008 - 15:00

Apple's doesn't make too many missteps, but the company continues to stumble implementing its MobileMe e-mail service.

Apple issued a second apology over the weekend for service outages which left users without e-mail; the first came last week for similar reasons.

The service was launched on July 9 along with the new iPhone 3G, which itself suffered from product shortages and network overload, according to reports I've seen.

Since the launch, the company has been migrating users of its .Mac e-mail and cloud storage service to MobileMe, which costs US$99 per year.

Initially given 90 days of...

iPhone isn't the whole story

DaniWeb IT Discussion Community (Featured Entries)  Mon, 07/14/2008 - 10:32

My colleague Ron Miller makes some excellent points about the iPhone shortage in the US in his blog entry.

If this were any other company we would indeed be taking them to task. Hang on though, let's think a minute: everyone's talking about a hardware shortage, the iPhones aren't in stock yet so it's a bad thing, yes?

Well, yes, but that's only part of the story. A hardware shortage can be rectified over time. In the longer term a few people hanging around waiting for their phones a couple of days is an inconvenience, nothing more.

For me what was much more interesting was the MobileMe...

No Flash Required: SproutCore Project For Rich Browser Apps

DaniWeb IT Discussion Community (Featured Entries)  Wed, 06/18/2008 - 22:20

Apple has done it again. This time with SproutCore, a JavaScript framework that simplifies development of native-looking Web-based applications without the need for Flash or any other specialized runtime.

Apple has reportedly contributed loads of resources to the project, which was originally developed by SproutIt creator Charles Jolley.

He now works for Apple’s MobileMe service (formerly known as .Mac). Though most of the reports I’ve read about SproutCore are calling it a Flash killer, the SproutCore demo applications I’ve seen make it look more like an Ajax than Flash.

And...

This cloud looks familiar

DaniWeb IT Discussion Community (Featured Entries)  Mon, 06/16/2008 - 09:50

I've just had a press release from Salesforce.com about the next iteration of its software. It's all going to be based on cloud computing - you log onto it from a browser more or less anywhere and it's available to you wherever you are.

Much as the new version of Apple's .Mac communications will be (rebranded as MobileMe) on the 11th of next month if you're an individual rather than a corporation wanting to use it.

Much as Google's likely to do with Android on its phones. I can't help thinking that this is actually a very old idea, rebranded as something new.

When I was at college in the...

Apple Says It’s all About MobileMe

DaniWeb IT Discussion Community (Featured Entries)  Mon, 06/09/2008 - 23:00

At the risk of sounding like just another Microsoft bashing session, I already trust Apple’s MobileMe more than Microsoft’s Mesh.

Apple today unveiled the new service which it says will be up and running in July. MobileMe will replace the venerable .Mac online file storage service and compete with Microsoft’s yet-to-be released Mesh synchronization system, which Redmond claims will support “all” mobile devices, but will initially work only with those running its own operating systems (of course).

The news was announced at Apple’s Worldwide Developer’s Conference at the...
