(National Academy of Sciences) As part of its Science & Entertainment Exchange, the National Academy of Sciences today announced that the GameDesk Institute will be awarded $225,000 to develop its Science in Motion project, an "embodied" game that provides a learning experience that actively engages students physically and mentally in difficult science topics.

(National Academy of Sciences) The system put in place by the Bayh-Dole Act of 1980 -- which gives universities significant control over intellectual property associated with the results of federally funded research at their institutions -- has been more effective than the pre-1980 system in making research advances available to the public and spurring innovation, says a new report from the National Research Council.

Nevertheless, the current system needs improvement, said the committee that wrote the report.

Leopoldina advising Namibia in founding an Academy of Sciences

(Leopoldina) Along with the Academy of Science of South Africa and the Network of African Science Academies, the German National Academy of Sciences Leopoldina is advising Namibia in founding its own Academy of Sciences.

The Namibian academy is to provide scientifically founded advice for society and policymakers and represent the country in the international community of academies.

A meeting with a delegation from Namibia and South Africa was held at the Leopoldina in Halle and Berlin from July 12-15.
