Nokia loss tempered by Windows phone launch

Mobile phone maker Nokia Corp. on Thursday posted a fourth-quarter net loss of euro1.07 billion ($1.38 billion) as sales slumped 21 percent even as the company's first Windows smartphones hit markets in Europe and Asia.

Nokia, still the world’s largest maker of mobile handsets announced a surprising strong net profit of about US$733 million for its third fiscal quarter of 2010.

However, with the good news the company has announced it is “simplifying operations” in its Symbian Smartphones operation that will send up to 1,800 employees out of Nokia.
