Corning Inc. says its board of directors has approved a plan to repurchase up to $1.5 billion of the specialty glass maker's shares and increased the company's quarterly dividend by 50 percent.

In a statement, the software maker's board declared a quarterly dividend of 20 cents per share, an increase of 4 cents, or 25%, on the prior quarter's dividend.

Phone company Verizon Communications Inc. on Thursday said it is hiking its quarterly dividend by 1.25 cents, or 2.6 percent, to 50 cents per share.
