(The Science Coalition) The Science Coalition issued the following statement today from President Deborah Altenburg after the U.S.

House of Representatives passed H.R. 5116, the American COMPETES Reauthorization Act of 2010.

(The Science Coalition) On the first anniversary of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act -- the economic stimulus -- the nation's research universities today provided nearly 100 examples of how a relatively small element of the measure is paying outsize short- and long-term dividends for the nation.

Of the $787 billion contained in the ARRA, $21.5 billion is allocated for research and science infrastructure.

(The Science Coalition) The Science Coalition strongly supports President Barack Obama's efforts to increase investment in basic research as a means to spur innovation and fuel the economy.

(The Science Coalition) The Science Coalition today gave Rep. Anna Eshoo its "Champion of Science" award in recognition of her strong commitment and continued advocacy for basic research funding.

(The Science Coalition) In the five months since passage of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009, thousands of research-related awards have been made, supporting important scientific efforts across the country.

ARRA delivered the largest increase in basic research funding in American history -- $21.5 billion. The bulk of the money is for scientific research and education projects, while $3.5 billion is allocated for research facilities and capital equipment.
