Software Engineer vs Database Admin

DaniWeb IT Discussion Community - IT Careers and Business  Wed, 12/07/2011 - 16:51

Hello,

I am currently working towards a computer science degree. I am interested in both software engineering and database administration, but I am not sure which I will prefer as a career.

I am considering working on an Oracle certificate, just to get my feet wet, and see how well I like working with databases.

My question is, if I decide software engineering is what I want to do, will having an Oracle certification be helpful?

I would assume database knowledge is useful when developing software?

Hi, I'm doing a research paper on Software Engineer and I am required to have an interview as a source. I have a few questions and if they could be answered, that would be great.

1.) What are your regular duties on the job?
2.) What type of training is needed to have a career as a Software Engineer?
3.) What is your salary?
4.) What type of degree is best for a Software Engineer?
5.) Which colleges provide good courses for this field?
6.) What type of environment do you work in?
7.) What are the work hours like?

IT Career Advice

Hey all,

I'm currently finishing up in college and about to start a career as a software engineer.

Apart from the experience I will gain in my job (should be primarily c++), I was wondering if there is any other experience someone might recommend I could gain in my own time to help my career advancement?

A Career in Computer Science

DaniWeb IT Discussion Community - IT Careers and Business  Sat, 10/23/2010 - 17:36

Hello all,

I am 28 years old and have about 4 years experience as an accountant. I am currently enrolled at a local university taking two intro computer science courses.

I am curious as to what opportunities might be available given my accounting background.

According to my academic advisor I will be eligible to enroll in their M.S. of Computer Science program after completing eight core c.s. classes (btw this is a reputable state school in my city).

DaniWeb IT Discussion Community - IT Careers and Business  Fri, 08/20/2010 - 08:41

Hello,

I am just about to start the second year of my Comp Sci/SoftEng degree and I wondering if any of you currently in the industry have any tips for students looking to break in to the profession in the coming years?

I have read about your portfolio playing a massive part in finding a good job but what else can be done to improve job prospects?

Any help is much appreciated.

Thanks.

Need advice on my career path

DaniWeb IT Discussion Community - IT Careers and Business  Mon, 08/02/2010 - 15:29

I have been a software engineer in a company for 2.5 years working with VC++ and C#. I always want to do my own business but don't know where to start...

For the last year I have been doing the project Xmart Calculator SNIP on my own during my spare time.

It cost me about 3k pounds and there is no income up till now. I am afraid this is not a good project...

My next plan is either applying for a higher pay job or try to do some iphone apps.

Both have advantages and disadvantages I really don't now which should I choose.

Which technology ocean to swim for a software engineer, Microsof...

DaniWeb IT Discussion Community - IT Careers and Business  Wed, 07/28/2010 - 06:39

Hi mates,

Firstly I'd like to apologize if the forum is wrong but I can't find the forum for my topic.

I'm a software engineering student from Turkey and I'm trying to lead my career as best I could.

A software engineer should have knowledge of any technology, C, C++, Java, C#, Linux, Windows etc.

But a human can't be a real professional at all of them. They are technology oceans continuously grow...
