  • Federal regulators are giving Sprint Nextel Corp. (NYSE: S) the approval to spin off and merge its new WiMax wireless broadband network with that of Clearwire Corp.

    (Nasdaq: CLWR). In a 5-0 vote Tuesday, the FCC approved a plan to combine Sprint's Xohm network with Clearwire's WiMax-like network.

    Google (Nasdaq: GOOG), Intel Corp. (Nasdaq: INTC) and a group of cable companies are investing billions into the $14.6 billion venture, which will have the Clearwire's name.

Telecom stocks are emblematic of how skittish investors are over the tech sector today. Some telecom giants are taking a beating over reduced consumer demand for their products, both here in the U.S. and abroad (especially around the once-robust Pacific Rim).

Here's a quick snapshot . . . AT&T Inc fell $.34 or 1.1 percent, to $31.22. Qwest rose $.06 or 1.6 percent, to $3.71.

Sprint Nextel rose $.10 or 1.4 percent, to $7.24. Verizon fell $.52 or 1.5 percent, to $34.21. AT&T and Apple are the stocks that interests me.

The hurricane bearing down on the Gulf Coast could be a test for the country's wireless carriers, which faced criticism and a regulatory push after Hurricane Katrina took out networks.

Sprint Nextel Corp. spokeswoman Stephanie Vinge-Walsh said the company's Emergency Response Team, with trucks that can act as cell towers, was 'caravaning down, military-style,' to the Gulf Coast on Friday.

  • GE Healthcare, a unit of General Electric Company (NYSE: GE), and Vital Signs, Inc.

    (NASDAQ: VITL) entered into a definitive merger agreement for GE to acquire Vital Signs. Under the terms of the agreement, shareholders of Vital Signs will receive $74.50 per share in cash for each Vital Signs share they own.

    Shares of VITL closed at $58 per share yesterday.
  • Sprint Nextel (NYSE: S) announced an agreement to sell approximately 3,300 towers to TowerCo for approximately $670 million in cash.
