A U.S. program that offers trusted trucking companies speedy passage across American borders has begun attracting just the sort of customer who places a premium on avoiding inspections: Mexican drug smugglers.

The trucking industry says computers that connect drivers to dispatchers can be used safely and should be exempt from legislation.

Shares of major trucking companies and package shippers rose Wednesday, as investors took heart from better-than-expected durable goods orders in May.
