Census Bureau Releases Results of 2007 Survey of Business Owners

Washington (PRESS RELEASE – June 17, 2011) - More than half (51.6 percent) of all businesses that responded to the 2007 Survey of Business Owners (SBO) were operated primarily from someone’s home in 2007, according to new data from the U.S.

Census Bureau released recently. Only 6.9 percent of these home-based businesses had $250,000 or more in receipts, while 57.1 percent of home-based businesses brought in less than $25,000.

About 23.8 percent of employer respondent businesses and 62.9 percent of nonemployer respondent businesses were home-based.

These companies generate nearly $1.3 trillion in revenues and employ 7.7 million Americans. These findings are drawn from 2010 U.S.

(PRESS RELEASE – July 15, 2010) – The number of minority-owned businesses increased by 45.6 percent to 5.8 million between 2002 and 2007, more than twice the national rate of all U.S. businesses, according to the U.S.

Census Bureau. In addition, the number of women-owned businesses increased 20.1 percent during the same period.

The total number of U.S. businesses increased between 2002 and 2007 by 18.0 percent to 27.1 million.

  • PowerShares DB US Dollar Index Bullish (NYSE: UUP) up 0.98% to $22.72. Increasing confidence in the U.S. is a pretty good signal that the Fed will raise rates to support the charge.

    The dollar is up to its highest level against the Euro since early-October.
  • SPDRs (NYSE: SPY) up 0.14% to $110.80.

    Shares of the S&P 500 Index ETF are pumped up on retail sales (see below).
  • SPDR S&P Retail (NYSE: XRT) up 0.60% to $35.20.

U.S. Census Bureau employment size of firm data (partially funded by the Office of Advocacy) for 2006 has been updated.

The data list the number of firms, establishments, employment and payroll by firm size for states and Metropolitan Areas by industry.

The number of employer firms topped 6 million for the first time in 2006, reaching 6.02 million. Small firms (fewer than 500 employees) represent the bulk of the private sector firms, 99.7 percent and 50 percent of the employment
