(Autism Speaks) Autism Speaks, the world's largest autism science and advocacy organization, has awarded 10 new research grants totaling $1,782,934 in funding over the next 3 years.

The selected studies will evaluate the effectiveness of a broad array of promising behavioral and medical treatments for core symptoms and associated medical issues in children, adolescents, and adults with autism spectrum disorders, focused on underserved populations including nonverbal children, preschool students in minority communities and working adults with autism.


 

Cell phones help save the lives of mothers, infants and children

(Partnership for Maternal, Newborn & Child Health) Simple mobile technology, like basic cell phones, can be used to save the lives of mothers in childbirth, and improve the care of newborns and children, reaching underserved populations in remote areas.More advanced mobile technology can do even more, such as checking on patients, keeping records, improving diagnosis and treatment in the field, and letting community health workers consult general practitioners and specialists for guidance.

(University of South Florida Health) A new Center of Excellence at the University of South Florida and Moffitt Cancer Center will focus on research, education and training, and community outreach to reduce cancer health disparities among minority and underserved populations.

The joint program is funded by a $6 million grant from the National Institutes of Health.

(Mayo Clinic) Mayo Clinic and Grameen Healthcare are exploring opportunities to benefit global, underserved populations by leveraging Mayo Clinic's knowledge and expertise in health care and Grameen's capabilities in effective, low-cost distribution models.

Following an initial demonstration project in Bangladesh in 2009-2010, the two organizations will investigate additional endeavors in Bangladesh as well as the application of learned, low-cost health care delivery models in the United States.
