Web 3.0: Why Microsoft Should Buy Pandora

DaniWeb IT Discussion Community (Featured Entries)  Wed, 06/01/2011 - 15:01

I'm sure many of you who use Pandora wonder why it hasn't been sucked up by Microsoft, Google or Apple. For those of you who don't even know what Pandora is, it is a internet radio station that uses algorithms to fit your music tastes.

How does it fit your tastes? Well, you either simply like or dislike a song. Everytime you do that, it finds more music that is suitable to your interest.

I've known about Pandora for years, but I've been a loyal Zune customer. Zune is the equivalent of iTunes.

Windows Phone 7 Ready for Primetime... if it was Still 2007

DaniWeb IT Discussion Community (Featured Entries)  Tue, 07/20/2010 - 21:16

Just as we were finally getting to know all the ins and outs of Windows Mobile 6.5, Windows Phone 7 is getting ready to drop - ain't that just like Microsoft?

According to the guys at PC Magazine, who recently got some hands-on time with the new platform, we've wasted all that time fiddling with Windows Mobile (as we had already suspected), because Phone 7 is nothing like Mobile, especially its earlier versions.

Who Gives A Crap About the Hotmail Refresh?

DaniWeb IT Discussion Community (Featured Entries)  Tue, 05/18/2010 - 15:07

Let me warn you I'm in a bit of an ornery mood today. So when I learned Microsoft is coming out with a refresh of Hotmail this week, you can understand I was less than enthused.

Every time Microsoft refreshes a product, the technology press gets all excited about it as though it actually matters.

Remember the Zune HD. It was going to blow the MP3 market away, only it never sold very well. Bing was supposed to change the search landscape, only Google still controls most of the same marketshare it had when Bing was launched last year.

This week's model is Hotmail.

News Story iPad orders starting?

DaniWeb IT Discussion Community (Featured Entries)  Mon, 02/22/2010 - 09:59

Apple may be taking orders for the iPad later this week, it transpires. At least so it says on this blog here.

I won't be ordering mine just yet, I confess.

There are a number of reasons for this.

First I live in the UK. We therefore won't be offered an iPad just yet - I could be wrong but there's usually a delay (would you believe we still can't get the Zune).

News Story Dear Microsoft: Please Give Up on Mobile

DaniWeb IT Discussion Community (Featured Entries)  Sun, 02/21/2010 - 15:57

Dear Steve Ballmer, I believe it's time to give up development of a mobile operating system. With all due respect to the multi-billion dollar empire you're entrusted with running, the simple truth is that Microsoft is quite bad at developing user interfaces that are friendly and intuitive.

Windows 7 is an improvement, but you're far from being out of the woods. What's more, it appears that your guidance, Mr.

Ballmer, might be making the problem worse, especially if the things you said recently about your instructions to Windows Phone developers were true.

How to Convert HD Video: TS, MTS, M2TS for Portable Devices

DaniWeb IT Discussion Community - IT Careers and Business  Fri, 11/13/2009 - 05:01

Part 1: What is HD Video and why should we convert HD video?

Nowadays, more and more families own digital camcorders such as JVC GZ-X900, Panasonic HDC-TM350, SDR-SW21, Canon FS200, Sony HDR-XR100 etc.

With these camcorders, we can store many wonderful and memorable scenes.

News Story All in All: A Good Week for Microsoft

DaniWeb IT Discussion Community (Featured Entries)  Thu, 09/17/2009 - 07:08

Attachment 11664

I confess I'm not always kind to Microsoft.

They stumble and bumble and often make bad decisions, and as such make a great target for a blogger like me, but looking back at the announcements they've made over the last couple of weeks, when you add it all up, they at least seem to be trying to move forward.

News Story The Zune goes HD

DaniWeb IT Discussion Community (Featured Entries)  Tue, 09/15/2009 - 12:48

It was surreal to read today that Microsoft's Apple iPod killer, the Zune, has gone all high definition.

That's to say that the new version announced today will have high-def capacity. Reaction has been positive; connect it to a TV and it'll be great, everyone's going to want one.

Well, tough, if you live in Europe.

Because it's not launched over here.

Google and Microsoft Exchange Big Announcements

DaniWeb IT Discussion Community (Featured Entries)  Fri, 05/29/2009 - 07:40

It's never a dull moment when it comes to Google, Microsoft and Apple (which is why I write about them so much), and this week Google and Microsoft made some big announcements.

For Google, it was Google Wave, an incredibly hyped new communications interface (more on that it in a moment).

From Microsoft, it was the HD Zune and Bing, its new search engine (which I wrote about just the other day in Microsoft Ad Wars Turn to Google).

The New HD Zune I've been as derisive as the next guy when it comes to the Zune and sales of Microsoft's answer to the iPod have been abysmal (as I wrote in Zune...
