Tiffany & Co. (photos from Belgium) for decades purchased only pre-cut and pre-polished diamonds from vendors.

But it has been striving to transform its diamond business amid a decade of industry boom and bust. The New York-based retailer now is buying uncut diamonds to supply its own cutting-and-polishing plants, in its Laurelton Diamonds unit.
