Layoffs On Tap for Silicon Valley Apple Stock Play

DaniWeb IT Discussion Community (Featured Entries)  Mon, 10/06/2008 - 15:10

The impact from the ongoing credit crisis is finally starting to translate into layoffs for the tech sector.

The folks I'm talking to say that AT&T, Apple, Yahoo, Sun, eBay, Microsoft, Nortel, HP, EDS, and even Google are going to be passing around pink slips with alarming aggressiveness in weeks to come.

Sun looks like its ready to layoff 2,500 employees, Yahoo up to 3,500, Apple about 1,500, and HP will slice off a whopping 25,000 staffers after its buyout of EDS.

Industry statistics say that about 1,417,000 tech staffers are out of work so far this year, and that's just in Silicon Valley...

Study: Fear of Losing Drives Auction Prices

WebProNews - Financial  Fri, 09/26/2008 - 10:18

Psychology researchers have suggested fear of losing drives up auction prices, not more “rational” economic principles.

So the next time you sense you’re overbidding on eBay, you probably are, not due to any theoretical “price the market will bear,” but instead due to some competitive wiring in your brain that says win at all costs.

Here's an interesting one for anyone involved in an online trading community. There are increasing moves afoot to make the communities themselves, whether we're talking about eBay, Amazon's second hand scheme or whatever we're thinking about, responsible for what they sell.

Now step back and think about it. You're running a business like eBay - check. You suspect...

Amid Zimbabwe's mind-boggling hyper inflation, a new 100 billion dollar bank note has more value as a novelty item on eBay than on the streets of the capital.

The note, launched this week, is worth enough to buy a loaf of bread - if you can find one on Zimbabwe's depleted store shelves.

Meanwhile on eBay, the bill was on offer for nearly US$80.

PayPal Eager to Get Into Point-of-Sale Transactions

Newsvine - business  Sat, 07/19/2008 - 14:24

PayPal is well-know to anyone who has ever bought anything on eBay or at other online vendors, but now the company is eager to take on other merchant processor services.

It denies having designs on this vast market, but industry observers are skeptical. But you be the judge.
